The fake news crisis currently plaguing much of the world has happened before and will probably happen again. The difference is scale. So what can we do about it? There are so many competing solutions, and yet only one tried-and-true method has consistently produced results: Independent, well-funded, well-maintained journalism. The money is there. It’s time to direct it where it can do what it does best.
