Journalism’s Poverty Problem

  • Saturday, Sep 15 – 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
  • JW Grand Ballrooms 1+2
  • #ONA18Poverty

Income inequality is surging, journalists can’t afford to do their work and the industry is desperate for paying customers. Yet these three strands of poverty in journalism are rarely discussed. We’ll make the case that these are constituent parts of a singular, larger problem and describe strategies for addressing it.

This session is designed for:

  • Newsrooms trying to cover poverty more comprehensively
  • Journalists struggling financially in an industry that doesn’t understand their issues
  • Anyone who wants better access to news and information for impoverished communities
