Newsrooms are exploring how to show the public what goes into creating the news. Transparency efforts aim to give the public an appreciation for the hard work that journalists do. Examples include adding descriptive boxes to online articles that inform the public about the reporting process and provide insight about journalists’ background and qualifications. The purpose of this session will be to surface efforts at being transparent and understand how well they work.
Possible speakers for a session like this include: Peabody Award-winning journalist and director of the Trust Project, Sally Lehrman; former director of community outreach at the Columbia Missourian and head of the Trusting News Project, Joy Mayer; and director of the Center for Media Engagement, Talia Stroud.
Audience members will be encouraged to share their efforts and experiences with newsroom transparency as the discussion leaders offer suggestions from their work and research. Attendees will come away from the session with new ideas about how to be transparent with their audiences as well as an increased understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.
