We want to hear from you: How to get more diverse responses to call-outs and requests for submissions

This session will explore ways to increase diversity in respondents when crafting and sharing requests for audiences to submit stories.

Big news events can be personal and touch on individual experiences. Newsrooms often seek to capture those memories and stories by asking readers, listeners and viewers to complete a form, record a voice message, or write an email. For example, after Kate Spade died, many took to social media to express their sadness and how much her brand meant to them. The Washington Post requested reader submissions: “For many women, their first Kate Spade bag was a defining moment. Do you have a memory to share?” But sometimes those call-outs struggle to reach diverse audiences. This session will explore how to ensure diversity – from story selection, to crafting the language that is more inclusive and encourages more responses, to spreading it on social media in an intentional way.
