From breaking news to mini-docs, how to create compelling video for the internet

Luis Velarde is a journalist, filmmaker and tinkerer who tries to explain human stories to a wider audience.

Many digital newsrooms are using more video stories to explain to their audience a certain topic. We can see that with NowThis, BuzzFeed, the Washington Post, etc. But many are not developing longer features, mini-docs or documentaries because of time constraints or lack of knowledge on how to start a video production or how to think visually and in 1st person. Along with other two seasoned visual journalists, I’d like to explain what it takes to find a visual story, how to produce and edited it later on. And most important, why sometimes a visual story can make the topic more compelling and expand your audience and the organization’s reputation.

I’m attaching my vimeo profile with some of the mini-docs I’ve done. I also have a portfolio of breaking news video. My colleagues are from Univision News Digital and BBC News.
